After a lively Saturday night and a much needed lazy Sunday lie in, our visit to the Santo Lounge for brunch was inevitable and welcome.
Santo was busy but not crowded and on a day as warm and beautiful as today their breezy and comfortable venue was a perfect place to be. The windows that run the length of two sides of the room can be fully folded back so if you are lucky enough to get a table by the window it is as good as sitting outside. We sat by the window, enjoying the fresh air and warmth and even on a Sunday morning there was plenty of activity to watch along the High Street.
Our brunch of rich, smooth freshly made coffee, “Crispy Smoked Back Bacon Butty” and “Egg and Bacon Stack” was served up quickly by the always friendly and helpful staff.
This was my first try of the “Egg and Bacon Stack” and whilst the idea of this dish is brilliant I must admit I do prefer my eggy bread and bacon to be a bit crispier and it felt today that the food preparation was perhaps a little rushed. Nevertheless, this is still a great breakfast dish and the sweet twist of golden syrup is beautifully balanced by the thick salty bacon.
Alex had one of our Santo favourites; “Crispy Smoked Back Bacon Butty”. Today it was
served on fresh, soft multigrain bread, but again the bacon was not as crispy as it usually is and it would have benefitted from another couple of minutes under the grill.
Having replenished our energy supplies we moved outside to catch some of the lunchtime sun and finished our visit off with another perfectly made cappuccino and a cheeky cake treat. The indulgent Chococarnage is a heavy, rich, dark chocolate slice, packed with dried fruit, biscuit chunks and covered in smooth chocolate icing; it is just right for sharing.
Despite the minor moan about the details of these dishes they certainly hit the spot this morning. I have to stress that normally the quality of the ingredients, preparation and presentation is faultless so I will forgive this slight blip and the Santo Lounge will remain on my list of favourite places to relax and waste away a few hours.
